As many of you know, the professional Australian surfing sisters Ellie-Jean and Holly-Daze Coffey recently traveled from the Gold Coast to Austin, Texas, for two weeks of southern hospitality. (Yesterday’s smoking gallery)
They wanted to visit because they’ve been Chivers for years, we have a lot of Australian Chivers. The Coffey sisters wanted to experience a ‘proper Chive meetup’, see theCHIVE HQ, and be a part of theCHIVE community here in Texas; even take a small vacation from surfing.
First, I have to thank all our Texas Chivers for making the Coffey’s feel so welcome. So many Chivers went out of their way to make them feel at home. Ellie and Holly have asked me to personally thank all of you for ‘one of the greatest experiences of our lives.’
The first Chivers to extend an invite, LaRue Tactical. For those unfamiliar with LaRue they are an elite weapons manufacturer who make many of the guns used by our special forces, including the LaRue .308 which Ellie-Jean is firing here.
Before the sisters came to America they had never even seen a gun in real life let alone fired one. Ellie’s first firearm experience was firing a sniper rifle often used against an enemy target at 500 yards+. It had some kick.
If you saw yesterdays gallery, you saw only a sexy portion of their trip to America. Today is Part II, how the Australian surfers became Texas Cowgirls. Special thanks to Jena Mays, our resident Texas Chivette, for showing the girls how we do it ‘round here.
This is the chronicle the Coffey’s adventures here in Texas. We miss you girls already…
No trip to Austin would be complete without a trip to the world-famous Allens Boots.
Texas Chivette Jena Mays taught them everything they need to know about boot shopping, “Don’t choose the boots, let the boots choose you.”
The boots found them.
Every year on the Friday before Memorial Day, I host ‘Break John’s Credit Card’ at Shiner’s Saloon for our active duty and veterans. The concept is simple – I throw down my personal credit card and our service members can order whatever they want, as long as they want, until fraud prevention shuts down my credit card. It is possibly the most blissfully irresponsible thing I do all year.
This year the Coffey sisters surprised everybody at the meetup!
We raised a glass to Tommy Kim, my friend and Army Ranger who passed away last year after a long battle with brain cancer, and to all those who gave the last full measure. theCHIVE will always be the last great publishing stronghold dedicated to serving our veterans.
Seeing this photo, it occurred to me that at Chive meetups people can hang out in bear suits and I don’t even really notice. Just seems normal.
A group of airmen about to graduate made the trip. Oh, the flyboys. Ellie and Holly say hi. Dont’ let it go to your heads 😉
And we finally broke my credit card. It took almost 3 hours. Nobody can do Level 5 damage to my credit card like our service men and women. Y’all know how to throw down.
“We can’t surf here but, do you have any skate parks here?”, said Ellie, “We need to get our fix.”
Took Ellie-Jean to a great Italian restaurant.
Not Pictured: Any Italian food whatsoever.
Oh yes, we went there.
That moment when Mac realized Holly had his Dominoes Pizza Rolex.
We hosted a going away party for the sisters at Capital Grille in Austin, you’ll find us at the bar at Cap Grille more often than not. The last photo taken before their departure to compete at the Los Cabos Open of Surf in Mexico.
Thanks to the Coffey sisters for being such a positive presence in our community. Holly you’re beyond awesome and Ellie-Jean, you’re absolutely enchanting.
And thanks to our production team, to Stacy, Joe, Annie, Kristen, and Jake. As well as Capital Grille, Shiner’s Saloon, LaRue Tactical, Outback Steakhouse (we’re sorry about Mac there’s no excuse for him).
